DESCRIPTION
WHAT TO EXPECT!
Travelers will be picked up from their hotel and transported to the Pacaya Volcano National Park. The trails are in good condition, but they are steep until reaching Pacaya in a 3.7 kilometer route. As it rises, it will pass through forests, farmland, and lava. You'll be hiking dirt trails and loose cinders, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes. At the summit, you'll enjoy wonderful views of the fumaroles, which can spew ash, rocks, or lava. Have your camera ready to capture the eruptions, to maintain safety you will be at a safe distance and out of harm's way. During this tour you will also have great views of the surroundings.
The Pacaya volcano is one of many (active) located around Antigua, the old capital of Guatemala, and perhaps the most accessible. The last major eruption of the Pacaya volcano was in 2010. Until 2016, it was actually possible to see lava up close during the hike – different tour companies took different routes. During sunset hikes, as soon as it got a little dark, the volcano could be seen spewing smoke and lava.
